How this is measured

In short:

• What it is: the messages people typed in the YouTube live chats of news channels while they streamed the Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
• Copy-paste counts once: a message pasted 80 times counts as one, so a group pasting the same line cannot make its side look bigger.

What is counted

• Messages from the start of the first broadcast to the last message of the day. Chat before the broadcast begins is left out.
• Per minute counts use Manila time.
• A copy-paste is the same message (ignoring capital letters, spacing and emoji) posted 3 or more times in one day.
• Copy-pastes count once. Every percentage, bar and senator count on this site counts each different message a single time, so a message pasted 80 times weighs the same as one typed once. We keep no names, so we cannot tell one person pasting from many people typing the same words. Counting once means a few people pasting cannot move the numbers. Only the per-minute chart, the moments and the most copy-pasted list show every message.
• Copy-paste by side: how many times, on average, each different message on each side was posted. The top of the page mentions it when one side's share of copy-pastes is 10 points or more above the other's.
• Moments are found automatically: the busiest minutes, and bursts of one copy-pasted message.
• What happened on air at each moment, and the quote, come from the broadcast's automatic captions. We read them and check each line by hand. Quotes keep the speaker's words, with filler like "uh" taken out.

Photos

The session hall photo is by the Philippine News Agency; the Vice President's portrait is her office's official photo; senators' portraits are from the Senate of the Philippines and the senators' offices. All are public domain and come from Wikimedia Commons. No image from the broadcasts is used.

Privacy

No names, channel IDs or profile details of the people in the chat are collected or stored. Quoted messages are filtered to leave out links, phone numbers, @mentions and profanity. For more information, you can reach us at hello@oblyxlabs.com.
